Hey, are you using Survivor Algebra in the classroom? I know that hundreds of teachers are and I've heard from a lot of them!

Here's a special "sticky" thread where you can discuss and exchange ideas on how the implement Survivor Algebra in the classroom. I'm sure that many of you have tweaked and improved on my ideas! (You can find my stuff on Survivor Algebra at http://www.coolmath.com/Survivor-Algebra/.)

Are there any posts about Survivor Algebra besides the original sticky? I want to start implementing it in my classroom, but I wanted to see how others had used it. Idea

Well, I know that many, many are using it -- maybe even a few hundred... But, unfortunately, this forum hasn't quite caught on.

Sorry about that! I still have hope though. Very Happy

Well....I guess someone has to start posting here for others to get even more interested.

I am going to create a tribe chart to help build the competition up in my room and make tribe posters as well.

If I can figure out how, I'll post or send it to you.

Your post got me curious... 214 people have downloaded the Survivor Algebra packet since I made it available in that form (about a year).... AND the Survivor Algebra area on Coolmath has been accessed over 200,000 times in the last year (that's page views, not people). I've had that info up for about 4 years too. So, that might be a LOT of teachers.

OK, so i get the challenges and the bonus points and even the 10% participation grades, but what about daily work? and how exactly do you apply the bonus points? i just would like some more information about the grading scale and procedure that you use with Survivor Algebra. thanks!

Hi Jennie-

The daily work is just their homework. I would also sometimes hand out extra problems for them to work on as a tribe -- depending on how well they were working on their own. For me, and since my students are college age, I don't collect homework. I make it quite clear to them that, if they don't do it, they will fail the challenges and this is their responsibility! One of my goals is to train them to self-motivate and be in charge of their own success. (Wow, that sentence sounded like complete psycho-babble -- straight out of a graduate education class! Mr. Green )

Bonus points are just on challenges.

ok, so here's my next question. i am interested in using your books to implement the program at my school and so i am going to buy myself a set of all four in order to present the idea to my principal and hopefully get the money to buy class sets. assuming my pricipal oks the purchase, would it be ok if i made copies of a couple lessons for my students while we waited for the order to come in? also, do you know how long the shipping is for larger orders (about 80-100 books)? do you know what the amount of discount is? thanks!
